AFBP - Aptitude tests for young Friesian Horses. Horses are trained and assessed by the Studbook for dressage and carriage driving aptitude. Approved sires must have a given number of offspring pass these tests with sufficient scores to remain as an approved sire for breeding.
Aftekening - White markings. May be toegestaan (allowed - few white hairs (ewh) or small white star (Kol) not exceeding 3.2 cm diameter above eyeline on forehead) or niet Toegestaan (not allowed - white snip on lip, white markings below eyeline, star greater than 3.2cm diameter, white markings on legs, around coronet band or white sole of foot.

Approved Stallion (also known as studbook stallion) - A stallion of exceptional breeding and quality which has passed the strict selection criteria of the KFPS (including veterinary examinations, gradings and performance tests) and has been approved for breeding and entered into the main studbook.
Bijboek I (B-Book I) - A secondary studbook for Friesian horses who have a foalbook ster stallion with breeding privileges as the sire and a main studbook or B-Book I dam. Registration of horses into the biboek -I takes place following satisfactory DNA test results to confirm parentage.
Bijboek II (B-Book II) - A secondary studbook for Friesian horses who have a foalbook sire without breeding privileges as a sire and a main studbook or B-Book dam. Registration of horses into B-Book II takes place following satisfactory DNA test results to confirm parentage.

Hulpboek (Hb) - auxillary studbook used to help establish the main studbook. It included mares of untraceable lineage but which demonstrated the physical characteristics of the Friesian. Now closed following the introduction of tattoos in the 1970's and microchipping in the present day.
IBOP - Performance tests for Friesian horses in dressage, show driving and dressage in harness.
Inteelcoefficient - Inbreeding coefficient. This must be kept below 12% and ideally below 5% in order to prevent inbreeding and genetic abnormalities.
Keuring - Inspection / grading of KFPS registered horses
Kleur - Colour - Zwart - black
Kroon (Crown) - A predicate awarded to mares 3 years and older of exceptional quality. The mare must achieve a first premie at a central inspection , be at least 3 years old and have a height at the withers of at least 1.55m. to be considered for provisional Kroon status. The definite Kroon status is given once the mare completes an AFBP or IBOP test, before the end of the next calendar year with a minimum score of 77 points and an average of 7.0 for the walk and trot, or to have acquired the Sport title in the same period of time.
Linear Score - Adult Friesian horses are graded on a number of racial type, conformation and movement factors which takes the form of a linear scoring system.
Merrie - Mare
Model - A predicate awarded to mares 7 years and older of really exceptional quality...of an even higher standard than Kroon. The mare must achieve a first premie at a central inspection, have a height at the withers of at least 1.58 meters and must have suckled or be suckling a foal to be considered for provisional Model status. For definite Model status, the provisional model mare must complete completes an AFBP or IBOP test, before the end of the next calendar year with a minimum score of 77 points and an average of 7.0 for the walk and trot, or to have attained the sport title in the same period of time.
Preferent - Mare - A mare who has produced four offspring which have gone on to gain Ster status.
Preferent - Stallion - Pre 2009 An approved studbook stallion who has sired four or more sons which have not only been approved for breeding but also approved on offspring. Post 2009 - an approved stallion gaining in excess of 1000 points, where points are awarded for approved sons, ster and model mares, preferent mares, ster geldings and stallions, and the sire and his offspring gaining the sports title.
Premie - Premium / Grade
Prestatie - Performance dam or sire, a horse who has three offspring with the Sports title.
Rastype - Racial type
Ruin - Gelding
Sport -The sport title is given to horses excelling in Dressage (Z1 + 5 points), Show Driving (cat. I &II honorary class and cat.III open class, in a single season placed 6 times as prize winner in the "green season" (15th April - 1 October). Dressage in harness (Z + 10 points).
Stap - Walk
Stamboek (Studbook) - KFPS' main Studbook that contains mares or stallions graded at a sufficient level and approved for breeding.
Stam line - The dam line. Much emphasis is placed on the stam-line by top dutch breeders.
Ster - For mares and geldings, those horses gaining first or second premiums, with no mark lower than 5, when graded age 3 years or older - For stallions of sufficient quality when graded at three years or older, the stallions however, remain in the Foalbook (vb). Ster designation of a stallion IS NOT approval for breeding.
Veulen - Foal
Veulenboek (Foalbook) - Registry for all Friesian foals. Mares and geldings remain in the foalbook until graded into the foalbook as an adult. Mares and geldings of insufficient height or quality, and with disallowed white markings will remain in the Foalbook. Stallions remain in the foalbook unless fully approved for breeding.
Vol Papier - Full Paper - A horse who has a pedigree where the first three generations of females in the dam line all have ster , ster-pref, Krown, Model or Prestatie (prestige / performance dam).
